White gives atari in the left centre.

:
Black is forced to connect.

:
White is forced to continue with the Main Semeai.

Playing at , instead, would be gote outside the Main Semeai area, so Black would ignore this move and win the Semeai Variation. The Capture Variation would end in a drawn game (jigo).

:
Black on his part is free to play outside the Main Semeai area. He gives atari at White's stone in the left centre.

:
White connects.

It is useless for White to try a ko fight with playing at , instead. She is far behind in Main Semeai Liberties, and cannot afford to connect the ko, because she would lose the Semeai Variation.
On the other hand, Black is free to capture the ko, and connect, achieving the same final scores as herein.

:
This move secures an additional point of territory for Black.

Black plays 0/1 reduction.
