Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.5) (.3)

: ( 648br)
Black closes the hole in the left centre, simultaneously occupying one liberty of White's group at the left.

White's previous move was played outside the Main Semeai; therefore Black is back at one over par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level.

:
This fact makes it mandatory that White plays her kikashi in the hanezeki as soon as possible.
She does not mind that Black will benefit by one point in the Capture Variation, as she has to concentrate on the Semeai Variation, which is much better for her.

Otherwise, Black will pre-empt White's kikashi with his own atari at , robbing White one decisive point in the Semeai Variation.

:
White defends her just played stone.
Please note that this move is her second one that is played outside the Main Semeai area, so Black is at two Main Semeai Liberties over par now.

:
Black continues with the Main Semeai.

:
White has to do so, too.
If she ever lost another, third, Main Semeai Liberty, she would be unable to capture Black's large group in the upper right in the Semeai Variation.

White does not want to connect her two stones in the lower left that are in atari, but chooses Dany's Sacrifice, instead. Black is comfortably ahead in the Capture Variation, so that reducing Black's score by two points in that variation does not really lead to success. And White would lose the Semeai Variation.

:
This is the last Black move that occupies liberties of White's group in the left centre.

: (A 648by)
White plays a move that belongs to the Main Semeai, too.

She must not get carefree, and give atari in the left centre, instead.
Black does not have any option to create territory in the left centre, so there is nothing to pre-empt. And White does not have any chances to do so either, due to the restrictions that apply in the moment.

:
Black plays KataGo's solid connection.

Please note that this move can be understood as direct answer to White's earlier move at .

Black plays 0/1 reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White gained one point of territory at the top.
  • Black did not capture White's single stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, Black gained one point.

Black + 2 => Black + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White gained one point of territory at the top.
  • Black did not capture White's single stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 3 => White + 3
