Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.5) (.3)

: ( 648ao)
Black captures White's single stone at the upper edge.

Please note that this move is played outside the Main Semeai area, and so loses one tempo.
Thereafter, Black is already par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level. This implies that - from now on, and as long as Dany's Sacrifice is still an option for White - he can only play moves that belong to the Main Semeai, or one move outside the Main Semeai, if White did so just before.

: (124 648bs)
The wedge in the left centre is White's strongest move.

Unnecessarily preceding it with her kikashi , in the hanezeki will not change the overall result of the game, but cost her one point in the Capture Variation.
Playing immediately at , however, is a grave mistake.
Other moves like in the left centre, or in the lower left corner, will be similar, probably reverting to choosing the move at .

: ( C 648bx)
Black intends to capture White's just played stone.

However, he might prefer occupying one of White's liberties by connecting at , instead. He will increase his score in the Capture Variation by one point.

:
In order to better analyse the situation, we continue with moves of the Main Semeai for both sides.

:
Black gives atari at White's two stones, but we will keep the move at in reserve for later, while being in "analysis mode".

: (148 648bz)
White might also play the central attachment at , instead, resulting in a change in the order of moves.

:
Please note that White is restricted to moves that were possible in the real game (i.e. with several of the previous moves of the Main Semeai played at different points).

This implies that giving atari with a move at is out of the question here (simply because Black would have captured at much earlier in the "problem solving mode").

: (154 648ca)
White secures two points of territory in the centre.

If she continued with the Main Semeai, instead, Black would be unable to destroy White's potential territory, starting with the atari at , just because he would end in gote locally. We already know that he cannot afford to do so, as he would suffer from the Punishment Semeai eventually.

:
Black is able to further reduce White's territory at the upper edge by one point, because White ended in gote in the left centre just before.

: (155 648cb)
White continues with the Main Semeai, choosing Dany's Sacrifice.
Please note that neither side wants to touch the hanezeki before White's decision point here in this subvariation.

Connecting her two stones in the lower left with would be a grave mistake.

Black must not play any reduction.

White will start the Semeai Variation with her kikashi , in the hanezeki.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is three points.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, but captured one White stone there, so the net effect is zero.
  • White got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured White's two stones in the lower left, so gaining four points.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, Black gained three points.

White + 1 => Black + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is three points.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, but captured one White stone there, so the net effect is zero.
  • White got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.
  • At the left, Black captured two White stones less, so losing four points.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, Black lost two points.

White + 1 => White + 3
