Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.5) (.1)

: ( 648ao)
White plays her kikashi in the hanezeki.
This is necessary here, because she intends to play a gote move outside the Main Semeai area next.

:
White connects her single stone at the upper edge.

However, this move is her last gote move outside the Main Semeai area - in principle - so she should have kept in reserve until after her decision point.

We showed this in the alternative subvariation ( 648cd).

:
Black continues with the Main Semeai.

:
White's move in the left centre destroys Black's hope for an additional point of territory in this area.

:
Black blocks as he does not want to lose his potential territory in the left centre.

:
White chooses Dany's sacrifice, and lets Black capture her two stones in the lower left.

Black plays 0/1 reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black gained an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured two White stones in the lower left, so gaining four points.
  • White captured one Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, White lost four points.

White + 1 => Black + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black captured two White stones less at the left, so losing four points.
  • White captured one stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, White gained two points.

White + 1 => White + 3
