Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.5) (.2)

(Referenced by 648cc)

: ( 648ao)
White continues with the Main Semeai.

She does not need to insert her kikashi , in the hanezeki "early" here.
Taking Dany's Sacrifice in the lower left into account, Black is already at the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level. Therefore, he cannot afford to lose a move in the Main Semeai by playing his own kikashi , , .

:
Both sides continue with the Main Semeai, until all liberties of White's left-hand group in the left centre have been occupied.

:
White chooses Dany's Sacrifice and lets Black capture her two stones.

:
Capturing Black's nakade is mandatory here, but does not add technically to the analysis.

: (A 648ce; B 648cf)
White occupies a liberty of Black's partial group at the top of the left centre, aiming at its shortage of liberties.

It can be easily seen here, why White does neither connect at at the upper edge, nor forces with a move at in the left centre.

: (A 648ch; C 648ci)
Black connects in the left centre.

He might consider capturing White's stone at the upper edge with , instead, achieving the same final scores as here.
However, he should not play the atari in the hanezeki, instead.

Black must not play any reduction.

White will connect at at the upper edge after her decision point.

She will start the Semeai Variation with her kikashi , in the hanezeki.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured White's two stones in the lower left, so gaining four points.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost three points.

White + 1 => Black + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured two White stones less at the left, so losing four points.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, White gained two points.

White + 1 => White + 3
