Black captures White's single stone at the upper edge.

He might consider giving atari with in the hanezeki, instead, but this will decrease his score in the Capture Variation by one point.

Black must not play any reduction.

White will start the Semeai Variation with her kikashi , in the hanezeki.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

Black + 2 => Black + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
