White throws-in in the lower left corner, achieving another approach-move liberty for her left-hand group.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black got one point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not destroy one point of White territory in the upper right corner, so losing one point.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black got one point of territory in the left centre.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the upper right corner, so losing one point.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost six points.

White + 2 => Black + 4
