Black plays atari in the hanezeki.

:
But Black ends in gote.

:
White's push in the left centre is decisive.

:
Black connects solidly.

Immediately capturing at , instead, would be mistaken. Black would lose two points overall unnecessarily after White's reply at .

:
Alternatively, White could also play at , creating territory in the centre. The final scores would not be affected.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai.

Connecting at would be a grave mistake.
White would gain two points in the Capture Variation, but only with the assumption that Black would use all of his just won Main Semeai Liberties for the reduction of White's top right corner.
However, Black would only use one of these, so that White would gain three points in the Capture Variation, but lose one point in the Semeai Variation. Both Main Variations would end with two points for White. White would have lost one point overall.

Black must not play any reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black did not get any territory there, so losing another point.
  • Black lost one point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, Black lost three points.

Black + 4 => Black + 1
