No Early Kikashi

White immediately connects her stone that was just put in atari.

:
Black plays his remaining kikashi at the top.

Black captures White's single stone at the upper edge.

Black is able to connect.

Please note that neither side wants to touch the hanezeki before White's decision point.

Black must not play any reduction.

White will start the Semeai Variation with her kikashi in the hanezeki.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black did not get any territory there, so losing another point.
  • Black lost one point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, White gained one point.

Black + 4 => Black + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2
