Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.4)

: ( 648db)
White recaptures the ko in the left centre.

:
Black captures White's two stones in the lower left, also erasing his shortage of liberties (after , , ) above.

:
White does not intend to continue with the Nakade Sequence, and so connects her single stone at the upper edge.

:
Black's push at the top is absolute sente.

:
White has to block immediately.

It is too late now to connect with at the left edge, instead.

:
Black throws-in.

:
White has to play her kikashi in the hanezeki.

:
The mutual occupation of opponent's liberties starts.

:
White concentrates on the Semeai Variation. Therefore, it does not make sense to prevent the capture of her stones at the left just now.

:
White recaptures at the left edge.

...

:
It does not make sense for White to fight the ko at the left edge. She will not benefit from doing so.

:
Black captures the ko in the centre.

:
Again, it is useless for White to fight this ko, as she will be unable to connect it.

Otherwise, Black would win the Semeai Variation by a large margin, too. His large group at the right would survive the semeai.

:
Black connects the ko.

Black plays 0/1 reduction.

((Capture Variation:))

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White did not capture Black's five-stone nakade, so losing five points.
  • Black's cumulated gain at the lower left edge is three points.

In total, White lost eight points.

Black + 4 => Black + 12

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White did not capture Black's five-stone nakade, so losing five points.
  • White's cumulated gain at the lower left edge is five points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2
