White stops Black from playing his kikashi in the hanezeki.

Black pushes at the top.

White inserts her kikashi in the lower left corner, threatening to kill Black's left side, before answering at the top.

Black captures White's single stone at the upper edge.

White plays her kikashi in the hanezeki.

White blocks at the upper edge.

Black connects.

Otherwise, White will gain in the Capture Variation, while losing the Semeai Variation by a large margin.

The Main Semeai continues.

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Black will have to capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • Black lost one point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the upper right corner, so losing one point.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, White lost two points.

White + 2 => Jigo
