Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.4)

: ( 648ee)
White plays her kikashi in the lower left corner, but which is not feasible here.

Please remember that this move loses one tempo in the Main Semeai.

:
Black answers locally, because he cannot afford to fight a ko for the life of his entire group at the left.

: (139 648eg)
White has to block at the top.

She is unable to pre-empt Black's throw-in at by occupying this point herself.

:
Black's throw-in is best now, turning White's kikashi () into a lost move.

:
Black captures four White stones.

:
White has to recapture.

...

:
The areas in the left centre, and at the upper edge are still unsettled.
For better analysis, we will - in principle - play moves of the Main Semeai only, while being in a kind of "analysis mode". This implies that certain groups that are in atari must not be captured.

:
We have reached White's decision point.

In the left centre, two Black moves are still missing. Black will either occupy both approach-move liberties () of White's group, or capture the ko with , and connect thereafter with .
Please note that Black's option have the same effect on the Main Semeai Liberty count.

At the right, Black's group has twelve liberties, eleven direct liberties (), and one approach-move liberty ().

In total, Black is ahead by ten liberties in the Main Semeai, which means that White will be unable to capture Black's large group in the upper right in the Semeai Variation, but which was her intention when sacrificing stones at the left.

Black will win the Semeai Variation by a large margin

The Capture Variation will end with Black + 9.
