Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.4)

: ( 648ed)
White gives atari at Black's two stones at the lower edge.

Please note that - in this position - White has already played four moves that could have served as ko threats, while Black has played one of these. We will replace three White ko threats in the following sequence.

Please also note that neither White, nor Black, will choose any move as a ko threat, which loses one tempo in the Main Semeai.

Ko: ; ; ;

:
The ko fight continues.

Ko:

:
Black recaptures Dany's Ko.

; :
Please understand these moves as a replacement for the exchange of , , which has been played earlier.

We now know that White's atari cannot be counted as an additional ko threat.
However, as you will see below, Black will win the ko in the left centre anyway. Therefore, our above mentioned earlier mistake does not matter here.

We ask for your kind understanding that we did not adjust the diagrams in this subvariation.

:
Now, Black recaptures the ko at the left edge.

Ko:

; :
Please understand these moves as a replacement for the exchange of , , which has been played earlier.

Please remember that White must not connect Dany's Ko, because this move would lose a decisive tempo in the Main Semeai.

:
And again, Black recaptures Dany's Ko.

Ko: ; ; ;

:
Fighting this kind of double-ko, but not being able to connect any of these, is fruitless. White continues with the Main Semeai - for the time being.

:
Black connects Dany's Ko.

Please remember that Black did not lose any tempo in the Main Semeai here.

:
White continues with the ko fight at the left edge.

; :
Please understand these moves as a replacement for the exchange of , , which has been played earlier.

:
Black plays the oki in White's four-point nakade.

:
Black connects the hanezeki's tail, starting the Semeai Variation.

...

:

:
Black connects the ko at the left edge.

...

...

:
White barely manages to capture Black's large group in the upper right.

:

:
Black connects.

White must still capture at before the end of the game.

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black captures an additional White stone in the left centre, so gaining one point.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.

In total, White lost one point.

Black + 1 => Black + 2

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain outside the Main Semeai area is one point.

Black + 9 => Black + 10
