Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.3) (.2)

: ( 648fo)
White plays her gote move in the hanezeki, preventing Black's kikashi at the same point.

:
Black plays his forcing move at the top first.

:
Black connects in the lower left, denying White that additional approach-move liberty, which would arise after her throw-in at this point.

: (A 648fr)
White connects her single stone at the top, choosing Dany's Sacrifice.

Connecting at just now would be a grave mistake.

:
Black captures White's two stones in the lower right, continuing with the Main Semeai.

:
We start in the left centre with Black's moves in the Main Semeai.

:
Capturing the nakade is necessary, but does not have any additional effect here.

:
White gives atari at Black's stones above.

"Usually", the following sequence would be played later in the game, after (Capture Variation) or just at (Semeai Variation) White's decision point.

:
This move is sente, threatening to gain some additional points in the left centre.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai.

She would lose one move in the Main Semeai, and so one point overall, if she played in the left centre too early.

:
Black continues with the Main Semeai.

If he mistakenly played the atari of .png"> in the centre, he would lose a decisive move in the Main Semeai with the connection of (after White's previous reply at ), resulting in the final scores of White + 1 / White + 2.
Therefore, White would capture at after her decision point, again getting two points of territory in the centre.

Black plays 0/3 reductions.

With 3/3 reductions, the final scores would be Black + 1 / White + 8.

White will play at after her decision point.

She will start the Semeai Variation by her kikashi , in the hanezeki and , but which does not matter here in this subvariation.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not get a point of territory in the centre.
  • White got two points of territory there.
  • Black does not need to capture White's two stones in the lower left corner, so gaining one point.
  • Black captured two White stones in the lower left, so gaining four points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

At White's decision point, Black's large group in the top right will have ten liberties - eight direct liberties (), and two approach-move liberties () - and so will be safe from becoming captured.

Black will win the game by a large margin.
