Capturing with at the upper edge would end in a disaster for him. He would be par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level after this move, and White's following throw-in at would push him below.

Black plays 3/4 reductions.

Please assume the rejection of Dany's Sacrifice and Black's second kikashi in the hanezeki (, ) played before.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White gained one point by blocking at the top.
  • Black gained one point of territory in the lower left corner by not capturing White's two stones.
  • At the right, Black destroyed three points of White territory.

In total, Black gained one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White gained one point by blocking at the top.
  • Black gained one point of territory in the lower left corner by not capturing White's two stones.
  • At the right, White gained an additional three points by capturing two Black stones.

In total, White gained five points.

Black + 4 => White + 1
