Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.2)

: ( 648aa)
Black plays KataGo's solid connection in the left centre.

:
White pushes from above, reducing Black's territory in the left centre by one point.

: (A 648gg)
White plays the large connection at the right.

It is not good to pre-empt Black's kikashi in the hanezeki with , instead.

:
Black captures White's single stone at the upper edge.

: (129 648gj)
White continues with the mutual occupation of opponent's liberties in the Main Semeai.

Even now, after all valuable points outside the Main Semeai area have been occupied, she does not want to play at in the hanezeki herself.

; ; :
Black plays his forcing moves in the hanezeki and in the lower left quite "early" (he might have done so even earlier).

: (A 648gk)
White connects her two stones that were in atari.

After Black's kikashi in the hanezeki are played, she will not benefit from sacrificing her two stones, gaining two tempi in the Main Semeai.

Please take notice that I was a bit lazy with the presentation in many subvariation, where we did not display , and , explicitly. I simply took them for granted.

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is two points.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White got one additional point of territory in the upper right.
  • Black gains two points by connecting his single stone in the lower right, but ...
  • ... also loses two points by not capturing White's single stone in the upper right.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is two points.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White got one additional point of territory in the upper right.
  • White gains two points by capturing an additional Black stone in the lower right, but ...
  • ... also loses two points by not capturing another Black stone in the upper right.
  • At the left, Black captures an additional White stone at the top, instead of in the lower right corner, so the net effect is zero.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

Black + 4 => Black + 4
