Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.3)

: ( 648gy)
Black plays KataGo's solid connection.

: (B 648hh)
Please note that here, in this subvariation, Black must not connect at at the upper edge. If he did, he would lose one point in the Capture Variation.

Black plays 3/3 reductions.

Please assume the rejection of Dany's Sacrifice (, ) played before.

Please note that neither side will touch the point lA before White's decision point.
We have shown in the subvariation for above that Black will not want to connect with .

Equally, White does not want to capture with , just because she will be unable to connect this ko thereafter.
is an approach-move liberty solely in the Semeai Variation. It does not add to Black's liberties when estimating his liberties for the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level.
In principle, at the moment of White's decision point, we can count seven liberties for Black's large group in the upper right for the Capture Variation, but eight liberties for the Semeai Variation. Capturing and connecting would cost White two moves in the Main Semeai, resulting in her inability to capture Black's group (then with ten liberties) after he connected the hanezeki's tail.

Consequently, White will use her sente in the Capture Variation (after having captured the hanezeki's tail) to capture with , and connect thereafter. In the Semeai Variation, Black on his part will be able to connect with .

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White did not capture a Black stone in the centre, so losing one point.
  • White recaptured one Black stone at the upper edge, so gaining one point.
  • White got one point of territory more in the upper right corner.

In total, Black lost one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White did not capture a Black stone in the centre, so losing one point.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the upper right corner, so losing one point.

In total, Black gained two points.

Black + 2 => Black + 4
