Quite surprisingly, White's connection in the upper right is not the best move now.

White will enhance her score in the Semeai Variation, if she blocks at or at the top, instead, or attaches in the left centre with .

He will lose one point overall, if he mistakenly plays KataGo's solid connection , instead.

Attaching with in the left centre is also possible and will result in a change in the order of moves.

Again, playing KataGo's solid connection at would be too anxious, losing one point overall.

Before the end of the game, Black will connect at at the upper edge, and White will connect at in the centre.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • White captured one Black stone there, so gaining one point.
  • Black gained one point of territory in the upper left corner.
  • White gained an additional two points of territory at the top.
  • White did not get one point of territory in the right centre.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • White captured one Black stone there, so gaining one point.
  • Black did not capture one White stone at the left edge, but one in the left centre, for a cumulated gain of one point.
  • White captured two Black stones less at the top, so losing two points.
  • White lost one point of territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured two Black stones more at the right, for a cumulated gain of three points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

Black + 2 => Black + 2
