Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.3)

: ( 648aa)
Black defends his lower left corner first.
Hereafter, the region in the left centre has lost much of its importance, because Black's large group at the left has two eyes in the corner already.

: (A 648gy)
White occupies the large point in the upper right first.

Pushing with in the left centre, instead, is a mistake, losing one point overall.

: (A 648hi; B 648hk
Black captures White's single stone at the upper edge.

Blocking the left centre with , or choosing KataGo's solid connection , however, would be worse for him in the Semeai Variation.

: (A 648gv)
White's wedge in the left centre is a strong move here.

She might consider pushing with in the left centre, and blocking with at the upper edge thereafter, instead. She will achieve the same overall result of the game, but enhance Black's score in the Semeai Variation.

; :
In principle, this forcing exchange should be left unplayed, and kept as a potential ko threat, instead.
In this line, however, it does not matter that White already lost one ko threat here, because she still has a more than sufficient amount left.

:
In principle, this atekomi is played outside the Main Semeai area. However, it creates an approach-move liberty for White's group at ; therefore, it does not lose a tempo in the Main Semeai.

Black is unable to continue with , or , in the left centre, because any of these moves would push him below the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level.
On the other hand, White threatens the severe cut at , which would win her the game.

Black is strictly bound to continue with the Main Semeai. Therefore, giving atari at is his only choice, because this move is the only one that also defends against White's cut at (which White will not play now; please refer to this subvariation 648of for details).

: ( A 648gw)
White connects at (she is better in the Capture Variation than in the Semeai Variation) here, providing Black with two Main Semeai Liberties. Now, Black is able to defend against White's cut at .

White might consider playing the push to before, which will increase her score in the Semeai Variation.

We ask for your kind understanding that we felt unable to adjust the move numbers (i.e. to increase these by two) in the many already created diagrams, which follow in this part of the variation tree.

:
Black gives atari in the left centre.
Please remember that this move loses one tempo in the Main Semeai.

:
Quite contrary, White's replay does not have an effect on the liberty count, because it creates an additional approach-move liberty for her left-hand group.

:
Black starts Dany's Ko.

:
Black is forced to connect at - sooner or later.

:
White's block at the top loses one tempo in the Main Semeai.

:
White is comfortably ahead in ko threats (, 8 x vs. 6 x ), so Black simplifies the issue by connecting at one of White's approach-move liberties.

:
Sooner or later, White will have to connect the ko.

:
Black connects the ko at the upper edge in return.

:
The Main Semeai continues.

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is two points.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black did not capture White's stone in the upper right, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the upper right.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is two points.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the upper right.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the upper right, so losing two points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.
  • Black captured one White stone less in the lower left corner, so losing two points.

In total, Black lost two points.

Black + 4 => Black + 2
