  • White got an additional three points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left is three points.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the centre.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed an additional point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White got an additional three points of territory in the left centre.
  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left is three points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the centre, so gaining one point.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White gained four points.
