Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • In the left centre, Black got one point of territory, but did not capture one White stone, so the net effect is zero.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black did not destroy two points of White's territory at the top.
  • Black connected his stone in the lower right, and destroyed one point of White territory in the centre, for a net gain of three points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • In the left centre, Black got one point of territory, but did not capture one White stone, so the net effect is zero.
  • At the left edge, Black did not capture one White stone, so losing one point.
  • In the left centre, Black captured one White stone, so gaining two points.
  • White captured two Black stones less at the top, so losing two points.
  • In the upper right corner, White lost one point of territory.
  • In the lower right, White captured an additional two Black stones, for a cumulated gain of three points.

In total, Black lost one point.
