In the Capture Variation, Black must connect at before the end of the game.

In the Semeai Variation, White will start with the throw-in at , forcing Black to capture at connect a few moves later.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the right centre.

In total, Black lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the right centre, so losing one point.
  • White got one point of territory in the upper right corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

Black + 1 => Black + 1
