White will force Black to capture at soon, and to connect thereafter.


At White's decision point, Black's large group in the upper right will have nine liberties, eight direct ones (), and one approach-move liberty ().
White on her side will suffer from the final ko in the upper right centre - found by Joachim ( 648ag) - that depends on the existence of two White cutting points in the centre (), and Black's ko threat at in the left centre.
Black's large group in the upper right will not survive the semeai, but Black will capture White's two wC-stones.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, but captured one White stone there, so the net effect is zero.
  • Black gained an additional point of territory in the lower left corner.
  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory in the upper right corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, but captured one White stone there, so the net effect is zero.
  • Black gained an additional point of territory in the lower left corner.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the upper right corner, so losing one point.
  • Black captured White's two stones in the left centre, so gaining six points.
  • Black captured one White stone less in the lower left corner, so losing two points.

In total, White lost six points.

White + 1 => Black + 5
