In the Capture Variation, White will connect at , while Black will capture in the Semeai Variation with , and connect at thereafter.

White is unable to connect at before her decision point, because this would rise Black's large group at the right to three Main Semeai Liberties over par, resulting in survival in the Semeai Variation.

  • White captured an additional Black stone at the lower left edge, so gaining one point.
  • Black did not destroy two points of White's territory in the upper right.

  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.
  • Black's cumulated gain at the lower left edge is five points.

In total, White lost two points.

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation (arithmetically) ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is two points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone at the lower left edge, so gaining one point.
  • White captured two Black stones less in the upper right, so losing two points.
  • Black captured one White stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • Black's cumulated loss at the lower left edge is three points.
  • Black captured an additional stone in the left centre, so gaining one point.

In total, White lost one point.
