Black must connect at sA before playing at sB in the corner. Otherwise, White would kill Black's large group at the left by giving atari at wC. Black would be unable to connect, due to his shortage of liberties.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the lower left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost two points.

White + 2 => Jigo

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the lower left corner.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the upper right corner, so gaining one point.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White gained four points.

Black + 4 => Jigo
