VARP

White retreats in response to Black's first push into her top right corner.

:
Black pushes once more into the upper right corner before ...

:
... defending his territory in the top left corner. This large defense wins him the game.

White could avoid the loss of the game – and reach a draw – only if she were able to successfully enforce a change the order of moves in the way that the entire endgame on the left side – that reduces both of Black's corner territories – would be played before Black starts with his own reduction of her upper right corner ( 730g).

:
In order to simplify the presentation, we will display all the endgame moves on the left half of the board first.

:
White starts the mutual occupation of opponent's liberties in the Main Semeai.
The endgame on the left side is entirely played out, so White will get the point of territory in the centre ().

///:

The comparison of the final positions in the left half of the board (Professional Solution at the left) shows:

  • White did neither capture Black's single stone at the top, nor his stone at the bottom, so losing four points ().
  • In the upper left corner, Black gained two points ().

The comparison of the final positions in the right half of the board (Professional Solution at the left) shows:

  • White got one additional point of territory in the centre.

In total, Black is five points better than in the main line of the Professional Solution.

Black wins by five points.
