Variations of the Professional Solution

: ( 738a)
This tsuke reduces Black's upper left corner, but – as we will see soon – does not have a very serious follow-up locally.

:
Black defends once.

:
Following the "usual" course of the endgame with a move at in the upper left corner would revert to the course of the Professional Solution (with the tsuke of Yamada Shinji played; 751), resulting in the loss of the game by two points, so Black gives atari at the right, instead, capturing White's pair of stones.

:
White further reduces Black's upper left corner, but to no decisive extent.

:
White must keep Black from getting two eyes at the right.

Living with a move at would be surprisingly large.
Please note that we did not consider Black playing elsewhere with any of his defensive moves in the upper left corner, as Black will win this subvariation anyway.

By capturing White's two stones, Black gained an additional approach-move liberty for his large group in the upper right. White now needs eight moves in the marked area () to occupy all of Black's liberties (instead of "usually" seven).

:
Black has one more liberty in the Main Semeai that "usual", so he can defend his territory at the lower left.
Thereafter, the point of , in return, will become White territory.

///:

The comparison of the final positions in the left half of the board (Professional Solution at the left) shows:

  • Black lost five points of territory in the upper left corner ().
  • White did not capture Black's single stone at the bottom, so losing two points ().
  • Black gained three points of territory () at the lower edge.
  • White gained two points of territory () at the upper edge.

The comparison of the final positions in the right half of the board (Professional Solution at the left) shows:

  • White lost four points of territory in the upper right corner (), due to Black's hasami-tsuke.
  • Black gained four points of territory by capturing two White stones ().
  • White got one point of territory in the centre ().

In total, Black is five points better than in the main line of the Professional Solution.

Black wins the Capture Variation by five points.

White, however, will prefer the Semeai Variation:

  • The territorial gains and losses on the left half of the board are also relevant here; White has a surplus of two points.
  • At the right, Black's large has an eye, so White is forced to also occupy an approach-move liberty during the process of taking this group off the board, resulting in a loss of one point for her.

In total, White is one point better than in the Semeai Variation of the Professional Solution that ends with four points for Black, so ...

Black wins the Semeai Variation by three points.
