The hasami-tsuke , a common endgame move, is the idea of Harry Fearnley, and gains points only in conjunction with the guzumi. Black is worried about his liberties, and this move reduces his direct liberties by one (at 72). However, it also increases his potential approach-move liberties by one (), and Black has another potential approach-move liberty waiting, at , which gives him an effective liberty at , so losing him no liberties overall. Incidentally, it is the presence of the single Black -stone on the first line that forces White to defend cautiously, so as not to let Black get an eye here in sente.
