Joachim's Ko-Semeai - Putting the Cart

Before the Horse (2013 - 2015)

4a1 - White's Second, but Unneeded, Kikashi

to Gain Additional Ko-Threats (I)

(Referenced by 156)

As a kind of desperate measure, White might try creating additional ko-threats in the top left corner. The exchange of , creates a cutting point, in order to create immediate ko-threats against Black's -group.

We also inserted the first moves of the Nakade Sequence ( / ) on the left side. White's group has five effective liberties (w, 4 * c), but Black's group has eight liberties (4 * c, 3 * b, k), so White lost a move with her kikashi in the top left corner.

You might want to find out for yourself that White would have generated sufficient ko-threats to win in the case that Black's group had seven liberties, i.e. one liberty less than here. To simplify, and shorten, the presentation, we will assume that Black played a protective move in the top left corner, with (in exchange for ), erasing all just generated White ko-threats there.

The situation is as already seen before. White's group has five effective liberties (w, 4 * c), Black's group has seven liberties (4 * c, 2 * b, k), and Black has either the ko-threat of on the left side, or of on the upper edge, needed to win the ko-fight. This means that all of White's efforts have come to nothing.
