KataGo's 2021 Solution

VAR

: ( 58aa)
White attaches Black's stone at the third line from the inside.

We inserted this alternative move manually. The sequence below shows KataGo's favoured continuation (in "Analysis Mode").

: (A 58aj ; 98 58ao ; 99 58ap)
KataGo favours the hasami-tsuke at , solidly defending the corner.

Just out of interest, I tried Black's hiki at , which was not seriously considered by KataGo. The reason became evident soon - Black will lose the game decisively.

Descending to , instead, leaves White less room for her forthcoming manoeuvres in the corner, but is nevertheless a mistake that loses one point overall.

Third point of interest - not seriously considered by KataGo either - was the hane at . As a matter of course, I expected a simple change in the order of moves (, , , ) thereafter.
However - as it turned out to my great surprise - I had given KataGo a quite difficult task inadvertently.

:
White continues with the hane of , inviting Black to crosscut with , which is also an atari.

KataGo also considered (CHITOOM).

:
White gives counter-atari at the upper edge.

KataGo also considered (CHITOOM).

:
White captures Black's stone in the lower left.

:
Black gives atari at White's two stones in the lower left at the earliest possible moment.

:
White connects immediately.

KataGo also considered (CHITOOM).

:
Black stabilises his formation in the left centre.

KataGo also considered for this purpose.

The crosscut in the upper left corner has been played already, so this move in the centre would be really no mistake, contrary to one of KataGo's selfplay games ( 58ct).

:
In order to simplify the presentation, we finish the sequence in the upper left corner here.

KataGo prefers capturing at immediately, and will return to after Black has filled White's eye with a four-stone pyramid.

We have reached a change in the order of moves with the superordinate variation.

The final scores of the game will become White + 2 / Black + 4.
