White cannot play at first. After Black secures life for his group with , White must return to , otherwise Black will reduce her group to only one eye. Thereafter Black can save his group on the left side, with a move at . In this case, there would be no need for Black to use the Nakade Sequence to reduce White's group on the left side to only one eye, so forcing White to capture the hanezeki's tail. Black will not gain in this process, compared to saving his group.
