Black threatens to live in the top right. However, this idea is thought much too simple. White ends the ko with , and eventually will win by sixteen points, according to our estimation below.

White wins by sixteen points.

This is consistent with the result of Cheng's first variation (five points for Black, 536). Black's unanswered ko-threat of is worth three points locally. Not being forced to capture the hanezeki's tail provides White with a gain of 23 points ( 882). We assume that the effect of the further endgame moves of both sides approximately cancel each other out. So we have 23 - 5 - 3 = 17 ≈ 16 from White's point of view.

Even if Black had kept the kikashi in the top right corner in reserve, he would have no chance to winning. Under this assumption, he could play the push of here as a ko-threat. With , he gains approximately 12 points (instead of three points above), thus White's advantage would be reduced to seven points. But White would still win.
