B - Capture of Black's Centre Group

(Referenced by 374; 520; 890; 902; 904)

We present the classical Capture Variation ( 757), which White starts by capturing Black's centre group, with the move at .

White here - as in the Go World article - immediately continues the semeai in the upper right with .

White will not exchange for Black any more, because this would result in a loss of two points, when the White group containing is captured.

Black:
35 (already captured) prisoners + 34 points of territory () = 69 points combined.

White:
23 (already captured) prisoners + 18 points of territory () = 41 points combined.

Result since :
Black + 28.

The Semeai Variation, and the (classical) Capture Variation are of equal value.

Again, the total score is Black + 2. But without Black's reduction () of White's top right corner, White would have six additional points of territory (), and win by four points.
