Variations of Our Solution (II)

VAR (L) (A)

: ( 396)
Black plays Joachim's hiki.
The sequences used here are based upon those shown in the main line of Joachim's Ko-Semeai ( 225).

:
In the hasami-tsuke area, White needs three moves to occupy Black's liberties (2 * , ). This is one more move than with White's atari in response to Black's bamboo joint kikashi, which matches the situation in Joachim's Ko-Semeai.

The "late" ko there will not work any more, therefore, White tries the "early" one.

:
However, on Black's side there is no need to follow White.

: (110 401; 109 403)
White connects the ko, but will be unable to win the semeai.
However, if White does not connect, and lets the ko open, she will lose the game, too.
The hane at on the upper edge, instead, is useless when Black's group has a larger eye.

:
Black's group has eight liberties left, so White is unable to successfully capture the hanezeki's tail at , instead.

:
Black wins the semeai by one move, and so the game.
