Variations of Our Solution (II)

VAR (L) (.2)

: ( 391)

!!! If it were only, and exclusively, the semeai, Black could succeed with the procedure shown in this sub-variation, under the additional assumption that White will - for the time being - co-operate, aiming at maximizing her territorial gain. !!!
Black hurries to occupy a liberty of White's group on the left edge, ...

:
... at the cost of four points locally.

:
The second move Black gains on the left side, ...

:
... at the cost of another three points locally.

: (122 429)
This is the third move Black gains on the left side.

Black might want to cut his losses by continuing with the "usual" endgame sequence - i.e. with a move at - but is it too late now.

:
White gets another four points of compensation locally.

Please note that Black cannot connect his two stones in atari, at , without losing sente. This adds one point to White's current gain of three points.

:
Both sides follow the "usual" path again.

: (157 430)

!!! Mistakenly, but for demonstrative purposes only, White follows Black's suggestion, and continues the semeai. !!!

However, there is nothing in the Tsume-Go world that could enforce White not to capture the hanezeki's tail with a move at , instead.

:
And in fact, Black is one decisive step faster, wins the semeai, and so the game.
