Now, Black must find a defence against White's cut at .


This subvariation contains one important line only.
You will find extensive elaborations on Dany's atekomi and the subsequent ko fight (= "Dany's Ko") in the "No Early Kikashi"-section of our variation tree ( 513a).

He will lose the ensuing ko fight anyway, so he might consider simplifying the matter by connecting at , instead.

Black captures Dany's Ko for the first time.

Like two moves earlier, he might simplify the matter by connecting at , instead, not affecting the final scores.

White's atari in the upper right is her first ko threat.


However, Black's connection at would have been sente before (threatening to gain a second eye by continuing with ). Therefore, Black would insert this connection as a kikashi earlier in the game, depriving White of one of her potential ko threats.

Black must connect his two stones at the left edge, erasing their shortage of liberties.

Otherwise, White would give atari with . After and , Black would be unable to connect at ; White would simply capture all of Black's connected stones with .

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left corner is two points.
  • White captured an additional three Black stones in the upper right, so gaining three points.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the lower left corner, so gaining two points.

In total, White gained one point.
