No Early Kikashi

White connects her two stones in the lower left that were in atari.

Please note that White lost two Main Semeai Liberties by this move.

Black defends his lower left corner, while continuing with the Main Semeai.

White plays her kikashi in the hanezeki.

If she does without, Black will give atari at in the hanezeki, achieving the same final scores - leaving the hanezeki untouched would be a Black mistake.

Black plays 0/2 reductions.

In the Capture Variation, Black will have to connect at before the end of the game.

White will start the Semeai Variation by throwing-in at that point, forcing Black to capture and connect thereafter.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, White gained three points.

Black + 3 => Jigo

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black captured an additional White stone in the lower left, so gaining two points.

White lost two points.

White + 2 => Jigo
