No Early Kikashi

White recaptures the ko, following Dany's suggestion of splitting the Nakade Sequence.

Black connects at the left edge, so erasing his shortage of liberties there.

He would lose one point overall, if he insisted in depriving White of her following move in the hanezeki by using his own kikashi there as a ko threat.

White connects at the left edge, completing the Nakade Sequence.

She would not achieve a better overall result, if she played in the hanezeki immediately, while losing the Capture Variation by a large margin.

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White did not capture one Black stone in the upper right corner, so losing one point.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black did not get any territory there, so losing one point.
  • White did not destroy one point of Black's territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black did not destroy three points of White's territory at the top.
  • Black gained one point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White did not capture one Black stone in the upper right corner, so losing one point.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black did not get any territory there, so losing one point.
  • Black captured one White stone less in the upper left corner, so losing one point.
  • White captured three Black stones less at the top, so losing three points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone at the right, so gaining one point.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the hanezeki.
  • Black captured one White stone less in the lower left corner, so losing two points.

In total, White gained two points.

Black + 1 => White + 1
