Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1)

: ( 648aa)
Black plays his forcing move at the top.

:
White blocks immediately, simplifying the game.

: (A 648gn)
Black plays KataGo's solid connection.
Playing the large move of in the upper right will not change the overall result of the game (i.e. the score of the Capture Variation), but hurt Black's score in the Semeai Variation.

:
White could do without this push in the left centre, and connect at immediately - without affecting the final scores.

Here, in this subvariation, White's reduction of Black's territory in the left centre (effective in the Capture Variation) will be compensated for by an additional reduction of White's territory in the upper right by Black. Both sides capture one more stone each in the Semeai Variation, so the net effect is zero.

:
White plays the large connection in the upper right.

:
Black captures White's single stone at the upper edge.

:
Black is able to connect.

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Please assume the rejection of Dany's Sacrifice (, ) played before.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower right corner is two points.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White lost one point of territory in the right centre.
  • Black connected his single stone in the lower right, but did not capture White's single stone in the upper right, so the net effect is zero.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower right corner is two points.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White lost one point of territory in the upper right
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, but did not capture one Black stone in the upper right, so the net effect is zero.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the left centre, but did not capture one White stone in the lower left corner, so the net effect is zero.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

Black + 4 => Black + 4
