Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.2)

: ( 648aa)
White pushes from above.

:
Black blocks.

: ( A 648ip; B 648iq)
White attaches in the left centre.

Forcing with in the lower left corner, instead, will increase White's score in the Semeai Variation.
Trying to precede the attachment with the forcing move will end worse for White.

: (125 648ir)
Black utilises this tesuji to connect his partial groups in the left centre, as well as creating an eye above, at the cost of one of his stones as a sacrifice.

Black might consider playing the "usual" move at , but White will win the Semeai Variation thereafter.

: (A 648iv)
White connects her single stone at the upper side.

Blocking at , instead, is a mistake.

: ( A 648iw)
Here, White connects "early".

However, it would be better to let Black capture and connect.
The score of the Capture Variation would remain unchanged, but White's score in the Semeai Variation would become better.

Black plays 3/5 reductions.

Please assume the rejection of Dany's Sacrifice (, ) played before.

With 5/5 reductions, the final scores would be Black + 1 / White + 3

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White captured an additional Black stone there, so gaining one point.
  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the lower left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

At White's decision point, Black's large group in the upper right will have nine liberties, eight direct ones (), and one approach-move liberty ().
White on her side will suffer from the final ko in the upper right centre - found by Joachim ( 648ag) - that depends on the existence of two White cutting points in the centre (), and Black's large ko threat at at the top.
Black's large group in the upper right will not survive the semeai, but Black will capture White's wC-stones in the upper left, and win by about 15 points.

Black will win the game by a large margin.
