Pre-empting White's forthcoming throw-in by taking the point of himself is a mistake.

Black must capture immediately, due to his shortage of liberties.

Otherwise, after , , , , , he cannot connect at , because White would capture at . Therefore, Black would be forced to fight the ko at to avoid the capture of his group, but which he cannot win.

These two points form a double-ko, and could be left untouched until just before the end of the game.
We exchanged these moves here to simplify the presentation.

Black plays 3/4 reductions.

Please assume the rejection of Dany's Sacrifice and Black's second kikashi in the hanezeki (, ) played before.

Later, White will play her kikashi , in the lower left corner; Black must capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White got an additional point of territory at the upper edge.
  • White did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White got an additional point of territory at the upper edge.
  • Black captured White's two stones in the lower left corner, so losing one point.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing four points.

In total, White gained six points.

Black + 5 => White + 1
