White attaches in the centre.

:
Black connects below.

:
White's move does not lose a tempo in the Main Semeai, because it creates an approach-move liberty for her left-hand group.

:
Black captures White's single stone at the upper edge, making miai of the areas at the upper edge, and in the left centre.

:
Here, we choose White's block at the upper edge.

:
Black has to destroy White's potential territory in the centre.

:
White recaptures at the upper edge.
Please note that Black has reduced White's territory there by one point already (i.e. ).

:
White must connect.

Otherwise, Black will gain by recapturing and connecting.

Black plays 2/4 reductions.

Please assume the rejection of Dany's Sacrifice and Black's second kikashi in the hanezeki (, ) played before.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White got one point of territory less at the upper edge.
  • Black did not destroy two points of White's territory in the upper right.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation (arithmetically) ...

  • White got one point of territory less at the upper edge.
  • White captured two Black stones less in the upper right, so losing two points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1
