Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.3) (.2)

: ( 648ix)
Black defends his lower left corner first.

: (A 648ke)
White's wedge in the left centre is her strongest move.

She will be worse, if she pushes with , instead.

:
As we now know, this kikashi should not be played, but kept in reserve as a ko threat.

: (129 648kf)
White chooses Dany's atekomi.

Please note that this move is played outside the Main Semeai, but does not lose a tempo therein, because becomes an approach-move liberty of White's group at the left.

It is a mistake to play the central attachment at , instead.

: (A 648kg)
Black intends to fight Dany's Ko.

White will win this ko anyway, so Black might consider retreating with , achieving the same overall result of the game.

Ko:

:
Black has to connect here - sooner or later.

:
White connects her single stone at the upper edge, occupying the last valuable point outside the Main Semeai area.

Ko: ; ;

:
The ko fight continues.

Ko: ; ; ;

; :
Please understand these two moves as replacement for White's kikashi , in the centre, which had been played too early by us.

We now know that White's kikashi cannot be counted as an additional ko threat.
Here, in this subvariation, our earlier mistake will not matter, because White is able to win the ko anyway, see below.

:
Black occupies one of White's approach-move liberties, as continuing with the ko fight would cost him points unnecessarily.

White is comfortably ahead in ko threats (, 2 x vs. ).

:
White has to connect the ko.

Otherwise, Black will capture there, and connect thereafter, achieving a drawn game. He is able to do so, because he has a sufficient surplus of liberties in the Main Semeai.

Black plays 0/2 reductions.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black captured one White stone in the left centre, but did not get any territory there, so the net effect is zero.
  • Black destroys one point of White's territory at the top.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, Black lost one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black captured one White stone in the left centre, but did not get any territory there, so the net effect is zero.
  • Black captured one White stone less in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the top right, so gaining one point.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, Black lost one point.

White + 1 => White + 2
