He will be worse, if he blocks at in the left centre, or defends his lower left corner with an "early" , instead.

Black plays 3/4 reductions.

Please assume the rejection of Dany's Sacrifice and Black's second kikashi in the hanezeki (, ) played before.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory at the top.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is two points.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the upper right corner, so gaining one point.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory at the top.
  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is two points.
  • Black captured one more White stone in the left centre, but one less in the lower left corner, so the net effect is zero.
  • At the right, White captured an additional two Black stones for a gain of three points.

In total, White gained five points.

Black + 4 => White + 1
