No Early Kikashi

White captures the nakade as a ko threat.

In this subvariation, White intends to play the atari in the left centre as late as possible.

This is the latest moment when White has to play the atari as a ko threat.

She must not play the peep of before.

Black simply connects.

Connecting at , instead, will not affect the final scores.

Black is not only behind in ko threats ( vs. 2 x ) - and so will lose the ko fight - but his only remaining ko threat in the upper right is disadvantageous, losing one point overall, so he continues with the Main Semeai.

White connects the ko.

Black plays 1/2 reductions.

Later, White will play her kikashi , in the lower left corner, so that Black must capture with before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed an additional three points of White's territory at the top.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the upper left corner.
  • White capture Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White captured an additional three Black stones at the top, so gaining three points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the upper left corner, so gaining one point.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
