No Early Kikashi

Please note that this was the very last moment to play the atari of . However, White simply would have lost a ko threat here, as she could have done without the peep.

Black plays his very surprising connection at , threatening to continue with , creating two points of territory in the left centre.

White has to give atari.

White has to connect the ko.

Black plays 2/3 reductions.

Later, White will play her kikashi , in the lower left corner, so that Black must capture with before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White captured one Black stone less at the upper edge, so losing one point.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the left centre, so gaining two points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1
