Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR

: ( 648mg)
Black continues with the Main Semeai, also intending not to touch the left centre before White's decision point.

Black just played oki into White's eye at the left, after having played only 3/5 reductions at the right (). He wanted to keep Joachim's Final Ko in the Semeai Variation still alive (Black's large group at the right has nine liberties left).

He will not benefit from adding a fourth reduction in the upper right.

Capture Variation:

:
White captures the hanezeki's tail.

:
Black recaptures.

:
White uses her sente to connect her lower stone in the left centre.

:
Black erases a White ko threat ...

... in sente.

:
Black captures White's remaining stone, starting a ko fight.

:
Black does not have any valid ko threat left, and so continues with the Main Semeai.

:
White connects her second stone in the left centre.

Black will have to capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture two White stones in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

At White's decision point, Black's large group in the upper right has nine liberties, all of which are direct ones ().
White on her side will suffer from the final ko in the upper right centre - found by Joachim ( 648ag) - that depends on the existence of two White cutting points in the centre (), and Black's large ko threat at at the top.

But here, White could answer Black's ko threat with , as she has an own large ko threat at .
Black will sacrifice his sC-group - and survive with his large group in the upper right; i.e. similar to a "usual" Capture Variation - because the gain of capturing these stones does not compensate for White's loss of capturing the hanezeki's tail.

Black will win the game by three points.
