Black just played oki into White's eye at the left, after having played 4/5 reductions at the right ().
Black's large group at the right has "only" eight liberties.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed an additional point of White's territory at the top.

White lost one point.

White + 3 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

White continues with occupying Black's liberties.

Black connects the tail, initiating the Semeai Variation.

Black captures one of White's stones in the left centre.

White pre-empts a Black move at , connecting his stone.

Black has to erase his shortage of liberties first.

White connects one of her stones.

Black connects the other one.

:
White inserts her kikashi in the lower left corner, forcing Black to capture at before the end of the game.

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White captured an additional Black stone at the top, so gaining one point.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, Black lost four points.

Black + 1 => White + 3
