Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR

: ( 648mf)
Black continues with the Main Semeai.

:
White connects her second stone in the left centre "early".

She would like to wait with this move until after her decision point, gaining one tempo in the Main Semeai, but Black would not cooperate with this intention - and capture her stone, as in the superordinate variation.

Black plays 5/7 reductions.

With 7/7 reductions, the final scores would become Black + 1 / White + 7

Later, White will play her kikashi , in the left corner, so that Black must capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture one White stone in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • Black destroyed two points of White's territory at the top.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

At White's decision point, Black's large group in the upper right will have nine liberties, eight direct ones (), and one approach-move liberty ().
White on her side will suffer from the final ko in the upper right centre - found by Joachim ( 648ag) - that depends on the existence of two White cutting points in the centre (), and Black's large ko threat at at the top.

But here, White could answer Black's ko threat with , as she has an own large ko threat at .
Black will sacrifice his sC-group - and survive with his large group in the upper right; i.e. similar to a "usual" Capture Variation - because the gain of capturing these stones does not compensate for White's loss of capturing the hanezeki's tail.

Black will win the game by five points.
