No Early Kikashi

White plays her kikashi in the lower left corner.

Black connects at the lower edge.

He must not ignore White's previous move in the corner, and capture the ko in the centre with , instead.

White blocks at the top, in order to reduce the number of Black's ko threats in this area. However, this move is not correct here, but loses one point overall.


White must connect her single stone at the top with a move at , instead.


Connecting the ko just now, with , will be even worse, due to the still open spots at the top.

In order to simplify the presentation, we let both sides connect a ko.

Black plays 3/3 reductions.

Please assume Black's second kikashi in the hanezeki (, ) played before.

Later, White will play her kikashi , in the lower left corner, so that Black must capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory at the top.
  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left corner is two points.
  • Black did not destroy two points of White's territory at the top.
  • White did not destroy one point of Black's territory in the upper left corner.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory at the top.
  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left corner is two points.
  • White captured two Black stones less at the top, so losing two points.
  • Black captured one White stone less in the upper left corner, but an additional one in the lower left corner, for a cumulated gain of one point.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1
